Parkes is centrally located in the Central West and is easily accessible for a day trip or and overnight stay and has so much to offer. There is always an exciting event taking place in Parkes, such as the famous Parkes Elvis Festival (January), the Country Music Spectacular (October), the Parkes June Long Weekend Picnic Races, the Trundle Bush Tucker Day (September) and the Tullamore Irish Festival (Easter).
Without any doubt, the major tourist attraction of Parkes is the world famous CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope. Star of the movie "The Dish" the Radio Telescope is one of Australia's most prominent landmarks and a must see attraction.The Dish Discovery Centre (open daily from 8.30am - 4.15pm) is where visitors are invited to explore the world of astronomy and discover what role The Dish plays in listening to the stars. Enjoy a coffee or a meal at the award winning Dish Cafe onsite, or make use of the free BBQ and picnic facilities. The Dish Cafe offers a unique dining experience with Degustation Dinners and Wine Tasting held regularly on Saturday evenings. Bookings are essential.
Goobang National Park, one of the state's newest National Parks is located 30 kilometres north-east of Parkes. Visitors are welcome to undertake passive recreation activities such as bushwalking, bird watching and camping.
In the town area, you can visit Garden Bower Art Studio, Pioneer Park Antique Machinery Museum, Craft Corner and Garden Centre. Parkes is also the home to a selection of unique boutiques, cafes and restaurants - not to mention all of the other larger retail outlets providing an opportunity for some retail therapy.
10 minutes from town you can visit the unique Alpaca Country Shop & Cafe. This farm runs a herd of 60 alpacas. Open Thursday to Sunday.
Peak Hill's Open Cut Experience is located just 400 metres off the Newell Highway with selfguided walking trails and guided tours available for groups all year round by appointment.
Parkes offers many and varied sporting facilities. The golfer is well catered for with a picturesque 18 hole grassed green course with watered fairways. (Helen & Mal are both members) Cart is available for a fee.
Parkes is an ideal starting point to visit the surrounding areas: The Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo is only 70 minutes away, a drive to Cowra takes about 65 minutes, and the trip to Orange takes only 60 minutes. Forbes, which is only 20 minutes away, reminds you about the setting of the movie 'The Dish'.
